Do you ever read out of your comfort zone or even the out of the genre you normally lean toward? Typically, I don’t (and by typically, I’d say 99.9% of the time). I am a romance reader first and foremost. Then mystery/thriller and straight up fiction and they all tend to have romantic bent of some sort—as my preferred norm. It’s just what I like (I like knowing that when I get the end of the book it *will* have a happy ending of some sort). The other day, I was at Barnes & Noble with one of my girlfriends. We walked up and down the isles (for two hours)to no avail—I’d recently bought several new books online, not to mention the scores of books I already have laying around so I was mostly window, er, isle shopping.
Now let me say, I would have snatched up something though if it caught my fancy, but at that point I either had it, had one like it or wasn’t in the mood for it. I was in the mood to shop so don’t get me wrong, I was *trying* to find something. Then while the gf was looking at a non-fiction section that I wasn’t interested in, I scootched over to the fiction right next to it. It was paranormal/sci-fi—if you don’t know me well, let me tell you a little secret, I have an *uber-hard* time suspending disbelief—to the point of friendly (and maybe once or twice, not so friendly) heated debates on the topic.
Anyhoo, I was looking at the books despite my lack of suspension and one book caught my attention. It’s called (Tomes of the Dead) Double Dead by Chuck Wendig. I picked it up and read the blurb on the back—which I almost *never* do. The blurb was so… quirky for lack of a better word that I bought the book. It’s a Vampire vs. Zombie book—again WAY out of my norm. I’ve never even read a zombie book before and maybe only one or two vampire books. Still… it was intriguing enough to buy. I’ve only read the first chapter—just before I went to bed last night. Once I get through it, I will report back and let you know what I think.
Do you read far out of you comfort zone? Would you buy something, so out of your norm because of the blurb? What’s the furthest-out-there-for-you book you’ve ever grabbed before and was it worth the detour?
I’m more likely to experiment with books from the library. Free is also guilt-free reading. But if something clicks, then I might purchase a book from that author later on. I’m open to most genres – right now some of the YA stuff (i.e. Hunger Games, etc) has been darn good.
